Covered in Snow | Katelynn M. Rogers

"Unnamed Woman, 37" by Katelynn M. Rogers

Covered in Snow series | Katelynn M. Rogers

Horizon Gallery

In this series of photographs, Katelynn M. Rogers draws connections between environmental decay and social issues impacting women in the state of Ohio. Nature, and specifically trees, became a personal projection of anxieties reflecting the artist’s own healthcare emergency, which led to research into other women’s experiences dealing with domestic abuse and reproductive crises. Motifs like tree branches and spider webs act as visual metaphors for the collective disquietude of local women, and their relationship to the socio-political climate of the state.

Artist Bio

Katelynn M. Rogers is a photographic artist born and raised in Northeast Ohio. Her work explores the intersections of maternal loss, generational trauma, and environmental decay—subjects she approaches through a lens of poetic inquiry and raw documentation. Drawing inspiration from oral storytelling traditions, mythology, and the subconscious world of dreams, Rogers seeks to understand how trauma echoes across time and lingers in the landscapes we inhabit. Her photographs often blend somatic gestures with depictions of deteriorating natural environments, suggesting an inseparable relationship between body, memory, and place.

Rogers received her BA in Fine Art Photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2022 and is currently completing her MFA in Photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her practice is deeply rooted in personal history while opening a dialogue about shared grief and the invisible legacies that shape us.

Her series Covered in Snow is a haunting photographic meditation on loss, both personal and collective. After experiencing a miscarriage, Rogers was drawn back to the wooded landscapes of her hometown in Canton, Ohio, seeking comfort in the places she once loved. As she returned to these familiar forests, she began uncovering stories of women who had died there under mysterious and violent circumstances— stories that had long been buried or unspoken. With a sense of reverence and unease, she began photographing these sites, using a range of analog and digital techniques to trace the lingering presence of lives lost. Over two years, Covered in Snow evolved into a quiet, powerful archive of grief, memory, and resilience, revealing how violence stains a place and how healing can take root, even in the coldest soil.
