The Remember Balloons
The Remember Balloons is an interdisciplinary performance project created by Director/Choreographer Dominic Moore-Dunson, in collaboration with Composer/Music Director Theron Brown, and co-produced by Ashley Moore-Dunson. The work uses dance, music, and storytelling to help families engage with memory, loss, and intergenerational connection. Inspired by the children’s book The Remember Balloons, the project explores how memories are shared across generations and how joy, grief, and imagination live in the body.
Through movement storytelling, a musical score spanning 20th-century styles, and evocative visual design, performers embody a family coming face-to-face with their own Alzheimer’s story. The collaboration between choreography and score allows emotion and rhythm to guide the audience’s experience, creating a work that is both physically expressive and musically rich.
The project is designed to be emotionally accessible to young audiences while maintaining depth and complexity for adults, making it a rare example of theater that genuinely serves multigenerational audiences without simplifying its themes. Premiered in Washington, D.C. in 2024, and featured on PBS Western Reserve, The Remember Balloons has toured nationally for two years, performing for more than 15,000 live audience members and will continue for the foreseeable future.
On June 20, 2026, Dominic, Theron, and Ashley will present a one-time-only, bold new version of the project, The Remember Balloons Live!, at EJ Thomas Hall. This performance will feature the full show onstage accompanied by a live 20-piece band, marking the first time Akron audiences will experience the complete work live.
