Outstanding Artist in Theater 2026

Melanie YC Pepe

Outstanding Artist in Theater: Individual artists whose work within their field has made a significant impact within the discipline over five years or more.

Melanie YC Pepe is a producer, director, administrator, and arts educator who believes in theatre as a public good and a catalyst for connection. She has spent more than two decades at Weathervane Playhouse, beginning as Director of Education and later serving for ten years as Chief Executive Officer and Artistic Director. She now serves as Executive Artistic Director in partnership with Kevin Lambes, her longtime creative collaborator, with whom she has worked for years as a director, choreographer, and executive leader.

During her time at Weathervane, Pepe has worked alongside staff, artists, volunteers, and board members as the theatre has taken on increasingly ambitious work and deepened its presence in Northeast Ohio. At the center of her leadership is the conviction that when the lights go down, and a story begins, a room full of strangers becomes a community. That conviction continues to shape her commitment to elevating artistic standards within community theatre while keeping the work accessible and rooted in the people it serves.

She has focused on building a theatre with multiple entry points: a place where artists refine their craft, and audiences gather around stories that matter. At Weathervane, those entry points are tangible. Community members can learn to act, design, direct, build, run crews, perform on stage, or work behind the scenes. The theatre offers space not only for performance, but for growth, mentorship, and collaboration across disciplines.

That commitment to access extends into the broader community through Weathervane’s inclusion in the GAR Foundation’s Essential Experiences program, which connects students to theatre through immersive, hands-on learning. And, under the guidance of Director of Education Kathleen Faubel, the Weathervane Musical Theatre Company’s pre-professional training program prepares students for college auditions and professional work. Many of its students are now working professionally, earning placements in competitive programs, and building meaningful professional networks, a reflection of the sustained collective effort of the Weathervane community.

Pepe is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and a graduate of Leadership Akron, Class XXXVI. Her honors include the Morgan Impact Award for Excellence in Arts, multiple Chanticleer Awards recognizing collaborative productions, and two Weathervane Playhouse Trustee Awards.

Receiving the Outstanding Artist Award is meaningful to Pepe because it reflects the community that she has had the privilege to serve for more than twenty years. She is grateful to her parents for nurturing her passions, and to her husband, Christopher, and their children for their steady support and love that make this work possible.
