Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza – Towanda Mullins

On May 29, 2024 – the 173rd anniversary of Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech, the Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza was dedicated, and a statue of Sojourner Truth by acclaimed Akron sculptor Woodrow Nash was unveiled. The plaza, located adjacent to United Way’s offices at 37 North High Street, honors the legacy of the American orator, abolitionist and women’s rights activist.

The site is the first historic site in the state of Ohio that recognizes the contributions of a Black woman in American history. Stakeholders include the Sojourner Truth Statue Fund, Akron Community Foundation, United Way of Summit And Medina County, City of Akron, Summit County, Knight Foundation, Summit MetroParks, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, National Trust for Historic Preservation. The plaza was designed by Summit Metro Parks Landscape Architect Dion Harris.

The design honors not just the life of Sojourner Truth, but also Black history and the intersectionality of the civil rights and women’s rights movements. Sojourner Truth stood tall for equal rights for all women, and her speech in Akron defending all women’s rights electrified the women’s rights and civil rights movements for decades. We are honoring the place where she delivered the speech through-out the Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza through interpretations of the original church, pillars that stood in front of the church are labeled: Activist, Faith, Identity and Power. This location provides empowerment and a rich history that we will all be proud of.

The story of the Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza began more than twenty years ago, when University of Akron professor emeritus Faye Hersh Dambrot proposed the creation of a statue of Truth and renowned local artist Woodrow Nash first developed a prototype. But without sufficient funding, the project was put on hold.

In 2019, the Summit Suffrage Centennial Committee, convened by Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of women’s suffrage, revived the project. Working with Woodrow Nash and a new coalition of partners – including United Way of Summit & Medina, which provided the site for the project – the Committee brought the new landmark, more than two decades in the making, to life.

The Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza was designed by Dion Harris, landscape designer for Summit Metro Parks, and features a floral motif inspired by Truth’s family roots in Ghana. GPD Group provided additional architectural work and construction was done by the Ruhlin CompanyDerin Fletcher and Alexandria Couch created additional artworks for the plaza.
