DESCRIPTION:THE BOX GALLERY OPENING RECEPTION: Friday\, April 12\, 5-8pmOn View: April 12 – May 18 \n\n\n\nSmall BOX: “Pages from Brother’s Grimm” by Elise RadzialowskiA painting and drawing student in her final year at The University of Akron’s Myers School of Art\, Radzialowski presents a series of watercolor narratives that bring together the archetypal Grimm fairy tales with the human experience of present day. “Through these stories\, I want people to remember where they came from\, identify their own hauntings\, experience the fantasy of a surreal story\, and see themselves as sharing life with all other human beings.” \n\n\n\nBig BOX: “Bursting at the Seams” by Natalie GrieshammerAn Arts Administrator for the Cleveland Museum of Art\, self-taught musician\, and feminist fiber artist\, Grieshammer holds a BFA from CIA and a MA from UA’s Myers School of Art. She presents highly-textured weavings\, which incorporate nontraditional shiny materials such as glitter\, plastics\, and ribbons. “My work aims to validate and celebrate femininity. Surface seduction\, unrestrained craft\, and decoration\, are a means of overturning cultural structures imposed upon the feminine.” \n\n\n\nVisiting The BOX GalleryThe BOX Gallery is located on the third floor of Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 E. Shows are FREE and open to the public during exhibitions on Fridays and Saturdays from 12-5 PM\, 3rd Thursdays (Thursday\, April 18 & May 16\, 4-7PM)\, and the Akron Artwalk on (Saturday\, May 4\, 5-9PM). \n\n\n\nAbout Artists of Rubber City\n\n\n\nArtists of Rubber City (AoRC)\, is a visual arts nonprofit with the mission to advocate for contemporary artists and Ohio art. The group promotes the appreciation and ownership of art created by contemporary artists as one facet of the rich culture to be found in Northeast Ohio. \n\n\n\nIts membership includes painters\, photographers\, printmakers\, fiber artists\, potters\, ceramicists\, glass artists\, mixed-media artists\, graphic artists\, sculptors\, jewelers\, and some who aren’t artists at all; they just love and support the visual arts. DESCRIPTION:The impact of the Cuyahoga River fire 50 years ago that awakened awareness for the environment can be seen in a traveling photography exhibit about the waterway at Summit Artspace on East Market until May 18\, 2019. \nThe show\, Crooked River Contrasts\, is on display in the main gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 East Market St.\, Akron. The exhibition is free and open to the public. \nGALLERY HOURS \nSummit Artspace’s main gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays\, 12-7 p.m.\, and Saturdays\, 12-5 p.m. Additional open hours include 5-9 p.m. Saturday\, May 4\, for Artwalk\, and April 18 and May 16\, for 3rd Thursday\, 4-7 p.m. \nPANEL DISCUSSION WITH RIVER PHOTOGRAPHERS \nSummit Artspace has organized a panel discussion for Thursday\, May 16\, from 7-8 p.m. in the main gallery. The panel event is free. Reserve a seat here: https://bit.ly/2Woo80T. \nART CELEBRATING THE CUYAHOGA \nCrooked River Contrasts is just one of many public events built around the Cuyahoga River’s celebration. The river was reported to be one of the most polluted in the country by the 1960s due to industrial waste. Although it had caught fire throughout the first half of the twentieth century\, the fire on June 22\, 1969 was the most intensely covered by media. It spurred the passage of the Clean Water Act and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. \nThe photo exhibition is part of the Xtinguish celebration\, a regional commemoration of the rejuvenation of the river. West Creek Conservancy is the sponsoring organization. Xtinguish and West Creek are the cornerstones of the effort and are funding and coordinating the exhibit. More information about West Creek Conservancy can be found at https://westcreek.org/. \nThe show is also supported in part by Ohio Humanities\, Akron-Summit Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and the Summit Soil & Water Conservation District. \nCuyahoga River shipping channel\, Cleveland\, 1969 by Mitchael J. Zaremba / The Plain Dealer\, Cleveland Public Library Photograph Collection \nThe 1969 fire was caused by a railroad worker who dropped a flare onto oily debris floating in the river. This was at least the thirteenth time that the river burned. Fire fighters put out the blaze before reporters arrived. Five weeks later\, Time magazine ran a story about urban water pollution with an undated image of the more impressive 1952 Cuyahoga River fire. \nCrooked River Contrasts will travel through communities along the Cuyahoga River in 2019. It will connect the public to the complex history of the river\, centered on its rebirth in past 50 years. \nWHO ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHERS \nThe exhibit features the work of 8 renowned and emerging Northeast Ohio photographers of the Cuyahoga Riverand Lake Erie watersheds: Ian Adams\, Jennie Jones\, William Rieter\, Jim Roetzel\, Christina Sadowski\, Jeffrey Gibson\, Rick McMeechan and D.J. Reiser. \nJennie Jones by Jaimie Janos \nIan Adams \nChristina Sadowski \nJim Roetzel \nJeffrey Gibson \nDenny Reiser \nIN TANDEM WITH A LOOK BACK \nContrasting their contemporary views are images\, video and text from the 19th\, 20th and early 21st centuries. The exhibit will also feature an opportunity through the Wick Poetry Center of Kent State University that allows gallery visitors to share their thoughts\, stories and memories about the river in writing. \nIn addition\, video monitors will present little-known clips dating back 50 years\, including interviews and river montages in its polluted\, improving and current state. \nCrooked River Contrasts details an extraordinary story of resilience by both the natural world and the citizens of Northern Ohio. The story of the evolving partnership between industry\, citizens and the civic landscape is rich and visually arresting. The area’s complex geology caused the southbound river to U-turn north here. In 1913 the 57-foot tall Gorge Dam was built to generate electricity. Today plans are moving ahead to remove this obsolete structure and restore the river’s natural flow. He is the co-author of Tiger Legacy: Stories of Massillon Football and Growing Season: The Life of a Migrant Community. \nHis work has appeared in the Communication Arts Photo Annual\, Graphis Photo Annual\, The Sun Magazine and Double Take/Points of Entry. He has twice won the James R. Gordon Ohio Understanding Award from the Ohio News Photographers Association’s Pictures of the Year competition. Tiger Legacy was selected as one of the ten best photography books for the summer of 2016 by American Photo Magazine. Growing Season won the Carter G. Juror for the show is Gary Harwood\, a veteran photographer and photography teacher from Kent. Harwood will lead a panel discussion with the photographers on Thursday\, March 28\, from 7-8 p.m. in the main gallery surrounded by the photos. The event is free. At a time when urban and rural areas are sometimes divided\, the common\, visual narrative found in photography provides an avenue for conversation and mutual appreciation. \nABOUT 419 SQUARE MILES JUROR GARY HARWOOD\nGary Harwood\, Photographer and 419 Square Miles Juror \nJuror Gary Harwood of Kent has worked as a photographer and teacher for more than 30 years. He teaches Visual Storytelling and other photography courses at Kent State University and is also an Artist in Residence with the Ohio Arts Council. He is the co-author of Tiger Legacy: Stories of Massillon Football and Growing Season: The Life of a Migrant Community. \nHis work has appeared in the Communication Arts Photo Annual\, Graphis Photo Annual\, The Sun Magazine and Double Take/Points of Entry. He has twice won the James R. Gordon Ohio Understanding Award from the Ohio News Photographers Association’s Pictures of the Year competition. Tiger Legacy was selected as one of the ten best photography books for the summer of 2016 by American Photo Magazine. Growing Season won the Carter G. DESCRIPTION:The current photography show at Summit Artspace on East Market captures the realistic\, vibrant life and locations found in Summit County. \nThe show is in the main gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 East Market St.\, Akron. The exhibition which runs until March 30 is free and open to the public. \nSee the winners here. \nMore than 100 photographs were submitted. Juror for the show is Gary Harwood\, a veteran photographer and photography teacher from Kent. Harwood will lead a panel discussion with the photographers on Thursday\, March 28\, from 7-8 p.m. in the main gallery surrounded by the photos. The event is free. Reserve your seat here: https://bit.ly/2TEpOSX \nFOCUS OF 419 SQUARE MILES\nThe focus of the exhibit is to highlight life throughout Summit County using portraits\, landscapes\, interior spaces\, nature and street photography submitted by local and regional photographers\, both professional and hobby. \nSummit County covers 419 square miles in Northeast Ohio representing many facets of geography\, business\, rural and urban venues and diverse people. \nThe expanse of Summit County will be reflected in photographs that convey emotions speaking to the people\, history and significance of life in the county. At a time when urban and rural areas are sometimes divided\, the common\, visual narrative found in photography provides an avenue for conversation and mutual appreciation. \nABOUT 419 SQUARE MILES JUROR GARY HARWOOD\nGary Harwood\, Photographer and 419 Square Miles Juror \nJuror Gary Harwood of Kent has worked as a photographer and teacher for more than 30 years. He teaches Visual Storytelling and other photography courses at Kent State University and is also an Artist in Residence with the Ohio Arts Council. He is the co-author of Tiger Legacy: Stories of Massillon Football and Growing Season: The Life of a Migrant Community. \nHis work has appeared in the Communication Arts Photo Annual\, Graphis Photo Annual\, The Sun Magazine and Double Take/Points of Entry. He has twice won the James R. Gordon Ohio Understanding Award from the Ohio News Photographers Association’s Pictures of the Year competition. Tiger Legacy was selected as one of the ten best photography books for the summer of 2016 by American Photo Magazine. Growing Season won the Carter G.
