Juried Art Exhibition at Summit Artspace on East Market has brought together self-portraits where artists interpret themselves as pixels\, stone coldness\, the familiar of avian beauties\, a hat\, feet and the many ways to create the human face. \nMe\, Myself and I? opened with a free reception with the artists  on Friday\, July 19\, 5-8 p.m.\, in the main gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 East Market St.\, Akron. See the winners here. \nThe exhibition\, which runs until Aug. 31\, is free and open to the public. Artists have been making self-portraits since the earliest of times\, sometimes depicting themselves as the main subject or as important characters in their work. \nMe\, Myself and I? is an exhibition of self-portraits with the works depicting the artists who produced the pieces. The exhibit is juried by noted local artist and educator\, Ron White and will feature a variety of mediums\, such as sculpture\, painting\, drawing\, and photography. \nARTIST PANEL DISCUSSION AUG. 29\nHear the artists and the juror talk about creating themselves in a visual medium on Thursday\, Aug. 29\, 7 p.m.\, in the main Summit Artspace on East Market gallery. Please reserve your seat at https://bit.ly/2x7sxdR. \nVisitors will see all styles of self-depictions\, including realism\, abstraction\, representational\, self-portraiture\, traditional\, conceptual and modern. Artists have been encouraged to use this exhibition to fully explore their own image and provide the exhibition audience with an inside view of the Me\, Myself and I? hidden inside. \nABOUT JUROR RON WHITE\nJuror Ron White is known for his captivating and often haunting images\, often of himself\, that allow the viewer a glimpse of his view of the world\, how he is affected by what he sees\, and how he wants you to view both his work and him. \nAn award-winning artist\, White creates with clay\, charcoal\, ink and ice. His murals are larger than life and draw you into a tightly-drawn universe of complexities and relationships. He is well-known for his portrait busts which freeze-frame the character of a subject\, often incorporating wicked humor or cutting political commentary. \nWhite’s work is in private homes and collections. He shows throughout Akron\, Cleveland and the Short North in Columbus. SUMMARY:Painting New York & San Juan by Lizzi Aronhalt\, July 19-Aug 31
DESCRIPTION:New work by artist Lizzi Aronhalt features her colorageous response to architecture and life in New York City & San Juan. The show runs from July 19 to Aug. 31\, 2019. \nNew York & San Juan opens Friday\, July 19\, with an artist reception\, 5-8 p.m. The BOX Gallery is located on the 3rd floor of Summit Artspace\, 140 East Market Street\, Akron\, Ohio. The reception and show are free and open to the public. \nEXHIBIT HOURS\nThe Box Gallery is a contemporary art gallery that opened in 2009 in downtown Akron\, Ohio. It is run by artists\, volunteers and members of the Artists of Rubber City . The gallery is open Friday and Saturday during exhibitions from 12-5 p.m. and from 5-9 p.m. during the Akron Artwalk\, the first Saturday of each month. The Box is open for Artwalk on Aug. 3\, 5-9 p.m.\, and 3rd Thursday\, Aug. 15. 4-7 p.m.\n \nLIZZI Aronhalt IS ALL ABOUT COLOR\nLizzi Aronhalt specializes in painting and drawing\, and captures the world around her with bright colors and bold lines. \nThe Akron native a has found a niche in her vibrant and colorful cityscape paintings. Ranging in subject matter from ice cream stands to taco trucks to full on city skylines\, her work has a  lively and almost musical quality.  Lizzi Aronhalt’s paintings quickly communicate her love for lines and colors and an appreciation of the architectonic qualities that are found in the urban landscape. Abstract and full of details\, Aronhalt’s works always communicate a sense of joy and liveliness. \nAronhalt had an affinity art from a young age and through her time at Akron Firestone High school. As a student of 2-D media and arts education at Miami University\, her love for painting and drawing grew. After college she spent time in Montenegro\, and it was through her time in Europe that she developed her appreciation for buildings and all things structured. \nUpon her return to Akron in 2015\, Aronhalt slowly jumped into the art scene of her hometown\, seeking to capture the buildings of Akron with the same joy that she did those in Eastern Europe. She is an active artist in Akron and works to collaborate and grow arts through teaching and creating. She has a studio at Summit Artspace on East Market Street. \nAronhalt’s works have earned her recognition at a variety of juried shows in the region\, including multiple honorable mentions and best of show for her work “Lost” at the Evolving Landscapes show at Summit Artspace in 2017. She also serves on the board of the Artists of Rubber City Organization. \nARTIST STATEMENT\nAs an artist I seek to understand and make sense of the world around me through drawing and painting.  Painting for me is a method to better understand the ordinary aspects of life and to celebrate them. Much of my recent work is an exploration of the places I inhabit and specifically the buildings I find myself surrounded by. It is exploration and celebration. The paintings do not capture the iconic\, but the typical with a fresh view.  The scenes and places I have chosen are at times in prominent cities\, but they capture the everyday with content such as the skyline of a small city in Eastern Europe\, ice cream stands in Akron and corner stores in Cincinnati. \nI hope to share an appreciation of people and places through the use of vibrant color and lively lines. I hope through my work the viewer is pushed to consider and grow their appreciation of the everyday.  I also hope the viewer can understand how much I valued the time I spent in these places through the works I have created. \nPARKING BEHIND THE BUILDING\nHANDICAP ACCESSIBLE\nELEVATOR AVAILABLE \nSee the Summit Artspace exhibit calendar for directions.\nPlan your visit by clicking here.\nHave questions? SUMMARY:Hiding in full view: This is Max Markwald; "Dissociation" Aug. 3-Sept. 7\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Month-by-month between 2018 and 2019\, Max Markwald became. The artist documented the process of dissociation on canvasses that eventually held no trace of the Melissa that was before. \nSummit Artspace on East Market opens this trailblazing exhibition of 12 large format paintings by local artist Max Markwald in the Transition Gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 E. Market St.\, Akron. The Dissociation exhibit\, which runs until Sept. 7\, is free and open to the public. \nEXHIBIT HOURS\nSummit Artspace is open weekly on Thursday and Friday\, 12-7 p.m.\, and Saturday\, 12-5 p.m.\, for visitors to check out galleries and artist studios. Additional hours include Aug. 3 and Sept. 6 for Artwalk\, 5-9 p.m.\, and during 3rd Thursday\, Aug. 15\, 4-7 p.m. \n \nABOUT MAX Markwald\nMax Markwald graduated from the University of Akron\, Myers School of Art\, with a B.F.A emphasis in Painting and Drawing in Fall 2016. He has participated in the Curated Storefront Project\, which places artwork in unused storefronts throughout downtown Akron. His large scale realistic portraits\, which explore iconic figures and gender\, have also been exhibited at 22 High Street Gallery\, Malone Art Gallery\, and the Hive Mind. Currently his studio is located at the Summit Art Space. \nDissociation Artist Statement\nIn Dissociation\, I painted myself once a month for a year as a way of documenting my gender transition (female to male). I began the series in September of 2018 when I legally changed my name to Max Markwald (he/him/his). Instead of showing a fluid progression\, each painting became an obscured portrait– hiding in full view. \nMy senior year at The University of Akron I had a critique with Judy Pfaff\, who was working on an installation at the Akron Art Museum. She asked me my favorite artists and I rattled off a list that included figurative painters Michaël Borremans and Egon Schiele. “ Those are all male painters” she remarked\, “You need to think about what it means to be a female artist!” I chuckled\, caught off guard\, and thought\, “I don’t want to be female artist\, I just want to be a painter.” \nAfter my senior show\, I did begin thinking about what it meant\, but the label didn’t feel right. I couldn’t recognize myself in the mirror or in pictures. Without words to describe the displacement I felt in my body\, I painted a series of androgynous self portraits. At my gallery opening I felt unqualified to be making work about gender. I looked around and I couldn’t recognize myself in the paintings either. \nThat summer I spent two weeks in Chicago for a studio intensive at North Park University. There I began appropriating Rosie the Riveter. I was drawn to her as a symbol of power for normal every-day working women . Painting my friends as Rosie became a way to explore and subvert gender roles. I finished the last piece while participating in a month long residency at the New York Academy of Art. \nDissociation by Max Markwald\nWhen I got back from New York City I began painting masculinity: an old photograph of myself at fourteen where I looked tomboyish\, the house I grew up in that had no drywall\, just rafters and fiberglass insulation; ridiculously gendered products like deodorant and body spray. I hated how girly my name was\, hated how pretty everyone expected my paintings to be. \nIn April of 2018 I was featured in Canvas Magazines’ “Who’s Next. Emerging Artists in Northeast Ohio.” It was very exciting\, but also the push I needed to come out and be myself– Max Markwald\, just an average-joe painter. \nThat September\, I legally changed my name to Max (he/him/his) and began the series Dissociation. I painted myself once a month for a year as a way of documenting my gender transition. Instead of showing a fluid progression\, each painting became an obscured portrait– hiding in full view. \n__________________________________________ \nABOUT SUMMIT ARTSPACE\nSummit Artspace is a non-profit community art center organization that provides studio\, exhibit and programming spaces in Summit County and the surrounding area for local artists and arts organizations; and is a center for art education open to all residents.
SUMMARY:OPENING NIGHT: This is Max Markwald; "Dissociation" Aug. 3-Sept. 7\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Month-by-month between 2018 and 2019\, Max Markwald became. The artist documented the process of dissociation on canvasses that eventually held no trace of the Melissa that was before. \nSummit Artspace on East Market opens this trailblazing exhibition of 12 large format paintings by local artist Max Markwald in the Transition Gallery. \nOPENING NIGHT\nJoin Max for the Dissociation show opening on Saturday\, Aug. 3\, 2019\, 5-8 p.m.\, in the Transition Gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 E. Market St.\, Akron. The reception and exhibit\, which runs until Sept. 7\, are free and open to the public.
One of Ohio’s oldest and most active art organizations\, ASA serves artists of all ages and stages of development – from student to novice to professional. \nThrough the years\, the organization has built a solid reputation as a venue for artistic growth and excellence. Members grow from being part of its artistic community and the variety of arts-related activities it provides. \nASA offers weekly Wednesday evening programming September through May\, featuring member critiques\, technique demonstrations and art history presentations. On Tuesdays\, artists meet to paint landscapes en plein air during the summer and fall months and still life subjects in the studio throughout the winter. On Friday mornings\, artists meet in our studio to work from a live model in life or character poses. \nDedicated to education\, ASA offers nationally acclaimed artist workshops throughout the year and members have the first opportunity to register. \nASA has it’s own gallery space which offers our artists the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work via monthly exhibits which are coordinated with other shows in the Summit Artspace Building. \nThe group’s studio and gallery is on the third floor of Summit Artspace\, 140 E. Market St. in Akron – one block east of the Akron Art Museum. \nAkron Society of Artists\n140 E.
