SUMMARY:Weather...love it or hate it\, it makes for great art in juried show
DESCRIPTION:Would you tie yourself to the mast of ship in the middle of a storm at sea to have the experience and then paint it? Joseph Mallard William Turner (1755-1851)\, a revered English Romantic painter\, printmaker and watercolourist\, did just that. \nSnow Storm – Steam-Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth\, exhibited 1842 Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775-1851 Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856\nWeather has always been the artist’s subject. Now Northeast Ohio artists bring their weather visions to the Whether to Weather Juried Art Exhibition at Summit Artspace on East Market\, Feb. 21-March 28\, 2020. The show is free and open to the public. Summit Artspace on East Market is located at 140 E. Market St.\, Akron. \nWHETHER TO WEATHER OPENING NIGHT\, FEB. 21\nWinners for Whether to Weather will be announced at 7 p.m. during the free opening reception with artists on Friday\, Feb. 21\, 5-8 p.m.\, in the main gallery. \nARTIST DISCUSSION PANEL\, MARCH 26\nBattling the elements and envisioning them has always been a realm of interest to artists. Join the artists of Whether to Weather for a discussion\, Thursday\, March 26\, 7-8 p.m. in the main gallery of Summit Artspace on East Market. The event is free and open to the public. Reserve your seat here. \nWHETHER TO WEATHER JUROR\nArtist Larry Pinkus of Akron is the Whether to Weather juror. His work\, Red Horizon\, is the show image. \nArtist Larry Pinkus\, with Madonna with Child\, FRESH 2020\nARTIST BIO \nI am basically a self-taught artist and I write that with some reservation. Most of my work has been in photography since the late 90’s. Prior to that I did draw and paint but stopped in the mid 70’s when I started a family. I must admit that I love creating with photography.  I know from taking countless photos that it is very difficult to capture the perfect picture. I’ve also learned that digital editing can provide some unique opportunities to create. Most of my work has not been exhibited and would have never been viewed outside of my family if it wasn’t for the encouragement of my wife and sister. I have been surprised that most of my submissions have been accepted. I am also somewhat happy that I haven’t sold any work because everything I do is very personal. I really appreciate the opportunities Summit Artspace has provided for me and others. When asked to juror this show I was apprehensive but the encouragement provided by this venue gave me the confidence that I could do the job. \nLet me explain why I have reservations calling myself an artist. I was sitting as a host for a show when a patron looking at the works was confounded why photography was included in the show. When she realized some of the works were mine an apology followed. But I understood the feeling she had. A painter\, sculpture has invested a lot of time developing the piece\, it has a tactile feeling which isn’t present in a photograph. With my pieces I try to blend the essence of the photograph with a feeling. It may take months before I am satisfied I have captured the essence of the piece. When I painted I believed my concepts were sound but my technique\, brush strokes and blending wasn’t as good as it should be. In photography I occasionally take a good picture but it requires a lot of work\, capturing the perfect lighting or having the right exposure. It also helps to have an assortment of lenses. Being self-taught\, I sort of stumble around in my quest to learn. With digital photography and editing a whole new world of creativity is available. Some of my failures in photography have become my favorite art pieces. Partly because they aren’t perfect\, they look more like a painting after I have manipulated them in Photoshop. For me there is no bad picture. I can always find something I can use to create a unique piece. \nSummit Artspace will be showing a collection of Pinkus’ work in the side gallery to the main show. \nGALLERY HOURS\nSummit Artspace’s main gallery is open weekly Thursdays and Fridays\, noon to 7 p.m.\, and Saturdays\, noon to 5 p.m. Additional hours include the March 7 Artwalk\, 5-9 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. on March 19 for Third Thursday. \nABOUT SUMMIT ARTSPACE\nSummit Artspace is a non-profit arts organization that provides studio\, exhibit and programming spaces in Summit County and the surrounding area for local artists and arts organizations; and is a center for art education open to all residents. SUMMARY:Find The Me I Seldom Share Portrait Project by Don Parsisson in The BOX\, Feb. 21-March 28
DESCRIPTION:Don Parsisson’s The Me I Seldom Share\, A Portrait Project digs deeper to reveal. His collection of portraits opens Friday\, Feb. 21\, 2020 in The BOX Gallery. The show runs until March 28\, 2020. \nOPENING FOR DON PARSISSON PHOTO SHOW\nOpening night for the show is Friday\, Feb. 21\, 5-8 p.m. in the BOX Gallery on the third floor of Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 E. Market St.\, Akron. Don will be there to talk with gallery visitors.\n \nThe reception and show are free and open to the public. The BOX is operated by the Artists of Rubber City. See BOX Gallery hours below. \nABOUT Don Parsisson\nDon Parsisson began his pursuit of photography more than five decades ago when he and a friend cobbled together a makeshift darkroom in the corner of a basement. Since then he has been photographing using film\, digital\, and instant cameras to explore a variety of subjects. \n \nDon believes that there is no one “true” type of photograph; different styles\, techniques\, and subject matter will resonate with different photographers and different viewers. This makes for a rich diversity of images. Many of Parsisson’s photographs explore ongoing themes or concepts while others stand alone as single images. \nWith the rising international popularity of photobooks\, Parsisson has pursued concepts that lend themselves to book form; collections of images that carry more meaning collectively than they do individually. Two of his books are currently held in institutional collections. \nDon Parsisson is based in Akron\, Ohio where he maintains fōtō\, a studio and gallery in Summit Artspace.  \nSHOW STATEMENT  \nThis exhibition presents a selection of the portraits I made as part of an extended project. I was seeking to capture the sitter’s face at a particular moment in time; the point at which they are fully in the moment but not yet aware of nor reacting to the presence of another person. \nWe all possess a variety of faces that we present to others. Each of these faces projects one of the persona we create for that interaction; student\, parent\, employee\, spouse\, friend\, patient\, etc. These faces can be thought of as disguises. They address the expectations of the other person and the role we assume to meet those expectations. But beneath them all is the real Me. The person devoid of artifice. Absent the external stimuli of another person\, we revert to a totally private face\, one we reserve for ourselves alone. We are aware of it only vaguely\, as if through a haze. It is the Me I Seldom Share. \nBOX GALLERY HOURS\nArtists of Rubber City’s BOX Gallery will be open: \n\nWeekly Thursday and Friday\, 12-7 p.m; Saturday\, 12-5 p.m.\nFriday\, Feb. 21\, 5-8 p.m. for the opening\nSaturday\, March 7\, 12-9 p.m.\, including Akron Artwalk from 5-9 pm\nThird Thursday\, March 19\, 4-7 p.m.\nAdmission is FREE and open to the public.\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS OF RUBBER CITY\nArtists of Rubber City (AoRC) is Akron’s premier contemporary art organization. We are a visual arts nonprofit with the mission to advocate for contemporary artists and Ohio art. We promote the appreciation and ownership of art created by contemporary artists as one facet of the rich culture to be found in Northeast Ohio. Our membership includes painters\, photographers\, printmakers\, fiber artists\, potters\, ceramicists\, glass artists\, mixed-media artists\, graphic artists\, sculptors\, jewelers\, and some who aren’t artists at all; they just love and support the visual arts. This rich mixture of talent and interests keeps AoRC lively and interesting. \nABOUT SUMMIT ARTSPACE\nSummit Artspace is a non-profit arts organization that provides studio\, exhibit and programming spaces in Summit County and the surrounding area for local artists and arts organizations; and is a center for art education open to all residents.
DESCRIPTION:SO BOSCHIAN: THE EXPLORATION INTO OUR DEEPEST FEARS\nHieronymus Bosch\, Dutch painter\, 1455-1516\nHieronymus Bosch was born Jheronimus van Aken in the Netherlands  where he lived all of his life from 1450 to 1516. His work was collected during his life time. Today he is seen as a hugely individualistic painter with deep insight into humanity’s desires and deepest fears. \nSummit Artspace put out the call to local artists to share works that channel their inner Bosch for the show\,  Boschian: Beautifully Bizarre \, Feb. 21-March 28\, 2020. \nDetail from Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch\nDetail from Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch\nBOSCHIAN: BEAUTIFULLY BIZARRE OPENING NIGHT\, FEB. 21\nWinners for Boschian: Beautifully Bizarre will be announced at 6:30 p.m. during the free opening reception with artists on Friday\, Feb. 21\, 5-8 p.m.\, in THREE G Gallery on the third floor of Summit Artspace on East Market\,  which is located at 140 E.
SUMMARY:Finding the Narrative with Joan Colbert\, Jan. 16-Feb. 22
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Akron artist Joan Colbert kicks-off the year of shows in the Summit Artspace on East Market Welcome Gallery with Finding the Narrative. \nOPENING RECEPTION \nThe free opening is Thursday\, Jan. 16\, 4-7 p.m. The show\, which is free and open to the public\, runs Jan. 16-Feb. 22. \nWELCOME GALLERY HOURS\nSummit Artspace’s Welcome Gallery is open weekly Thursdays and Fridays\, noon to 7 p.m.\, and Saturdays\, noon to 5 p.m. Additional hours include Jan. 16 and Feb. 20 for 3rd Thursday\, 4-7 p.m.\, and the Feb. 1 Artwalk\, 5-9 p.m. \nABOUT ARTIST JOAN COLBERT\nArtist Joan Colbert works in mixed media with an emphasis on printmaking\, collage and painting. Inspired by literature and influenced by her environs\, she often creates works that are thematic\, frequently including references to her favorite motifs: blackbirds and bare trees. In all of her work Joan strives to reach a balance between design and idea and hopes that in each piece there is just enough left unstated to evoke more personal interpretations. Her recent\, ongoing series\, As Potent as a Charm\, explores the malevolent side of familiar plants in a collection of black and white linoleum block prints. Although the concept is botanical\, allusions to dark tales and malfeasance hint at a narrative within each visual representation. \nFinding the Narrative by Joan Colbert\nA graduate of the University of Akron\, Joan has won numerous awards in both juried shows and art festivals. The Akron-Summit County Public Library owns work commissioned for branch libraries\, including the Mogadore\, North Hill and Goodyear branches. As the First Night® Akron 2001 button designer she created a mixed media piece: a whimsical skyline with a dove\, a peregrine falcon and a blackbird/jester. In 2019 Joan was honored with the Arts Alive Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Summit Artspace. \nJoan was gallery coordinator for the Summit Artspace Gallery from 2007 to 2013\, is a member of Artists of Rubber City and lives in the Highland Square area of Akron. Along with Open Studio events\, her home was featured in Artist in Residence – The West Hill Tour of Expressive Addresses. She has a studio in Summit Artspace on the first floor. \nwww.joancolbert.com \nABOUT SUMMIT ARTSPACE\nSummit Artspace is a non-profit arts organization that provides studio\, exhibit and programming spaces in Summit County and the surrounding area for local artists and arts organizations; and is a center for art education open to all residents. SUMMARY:OPENING! The Me I Seldom Share Portrait Project by Don Parsisson in The BOX\, Feb. 21
