SUMMARY:BOX Gallery presents solo exhibitions exploring time\, place
DESCRIPTION:From Friday\, Jan. 11\, through Saturday\, Feb. 16\, The BOX Gallery in downtown Akron is proud to present: supra by Bradley Hart and Human Nomenclature [Looting a Bazaar for Your Own Portrait] by Davin Ebanks. Meet the exhibiting artists at the Opening Reception on Friday\, Jan. 11\, 5-8 p.m. \nIn the Small BOX\, Bradley Hart\, a commercial and fine art photographer and member of the Artists of Rubber City\, presents supra\, which features stunning black and white photographs that explore the abstracts created by time and atmosphere. The image at the top of the page is a work in the show entitled Eurent by Hart. \nThe Black resolves itself to moonlight…by David Ebanks\n“The deconstruction of chemical bonds as those two forces take their natural course\, remind us all that the natural order of existence is entropy: decline\, failure and decay. There is beauty in the spaces between these points\, though—-for those who choose to see it\,” according to Hart. \nIn the Big BOX\, Davin Ebanks\, a professor at Kent State University and AoRC member\, presents Human Nomenclature [Looting a Bazaar for Your Own Portrait]. The show features a combination of contemporary glass sculptures and prints that examine the relationship between identity and environment. \n“I see my sculptures as metaphors for the subjective nature of identity and history…I work with some of the elements that form my personal and cultural identity: water\, pattern-work\, blackness and self-portraits\,” Ebanks described. \nThe BOX Gallery also has a new gallery director for 2019. Jaclyn Hale is a 2016 graduate of The University of Akron’s Myers School of Art. She is a metalsmith and contemporary jewelry artist. \nThe BOX Gallery is FREE and open to the public during exhibitions on Fridays and Saturdays from 12-5 p.m. Additional hours are Thursday\, Jan. 17\, 4-7 p.m. for 3rd Thursday and Saturday\, Feb. 2\, 5-9 p.m. for Artwalk. \nAbout Artists of Rubber City\nIn 1978\, Artists of Rubber City (AoRC) was founded by a group of University of Akron art students looking for places to display their work and for a way to stay connected. AoRC is a member-based visual art nonprofit with the mission to advocate for contemporary artists and art in the area. The group promotes the appreciation of art created by contemporary artists as a facet of the rich culture to be found in Northeast Ohio. Members have diverse backgrounds in visual art including painters\, photographers\, printmakers\, fiber artists\, ceramicists\, media artists\, graphic artists\, sculptors\, and jewelers. \nAbout The BOX Gallery\nThe BOX Gallery is an artist-run gallery owned by the Artists of Rubber City and supported by Ohio Arts Council and the Akron Community Foundation. It opened in October 2009 on the third floor of Summit Artspace\, 140 E. Market St. in Akron. Gallery exhibition proposals are open to the public and can be acquired at the gallery or at ArtistsofRubberCity.org.

SUMMARY:Time Travel Market Street Circa 1928
DESCRIPTION:Just a decade away from its centennial\, the historic building that is home to Summit Artspace on East Market has been a witness to the Akron story. \nSummit Artspace Executive Director Kamelia Fisher felt it was time to recognize the building’s architectural beauty and significance with a mural project. She enlisted the help of artist Don Jeffrey of Kenmore who has been documenting area historic sites in watercolor and ink for the past several years. \nArtist Don Jeffrey\, image by The Akronist\nTime Travel Market Street Circa 1928 opens Saturday\, Jan. 5\, with a free reception\, 5-8 p.m.\, at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 E. Market St.\, Akron. The mural of the original home of the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper constructed by John S. and James L. Knight will be unveiled at 6 p.m. \n“Over the years\, the building has had many different uses. As a center for art galleries and arts and culture education now\, it seemed appropriate for Summit Artspace to share the building’s past as an architectural and historic icon in downtown Akron through the visual arts\,” said Fisher. \nTime Travel Mural finds a home\nThe mural is a step back in time to the year the building opened\, 1928. The large scale artwork will be hung opposite archival photos of the building interior when it housed the newspaper. It will be on display continually in the building. \nGallery visitors will be able to see Jeffrey’s Time Travel sketches and drafts on the project in the Summit Artspace Transition Gallery on the first floor until Feb. 23 \nJeffrey’s work for the project is comprised of six large canvasses: Four that depict the building and the street in 1928 flanked by two canvasses featuring the sculptural forms that rim the building\, a magnificent lion and a sentinel. The lion was chosen for the show image. \nWatch a recent video about Jeffrey by The Akronist. \nSummit Artspace’s galleries are open Thursdays and Fridays\, noon to 7 p.m.\, and Saturdays\, noon to 5 p.m. Additional hours include Artwalk on Jan. 5 and Feb. 2\, 5-9 p.m.\, and for 3rd Thursday\, Jan. 17 and Feb. 21\, 4-7 p.m. \nPARKING BEHIND THE BUILDING\nHANDICAP ACCESSIBLE\nSee the Summit Artspace exhibit calendar for directions.\nPlan your visit by clicking here.\nHave questions? SUMMARY:Nature in Motion Exhibit by Penny Smith
DESCRIPTION:Artist Penny Smith brings her unique Nature in Motion exhibit depicting her love of the outdoors\, wild animals and cherished pets to Summit Artspace on Tusc\, Nov. 24\, 2018\, to Jan. 19\, 2019. \nPenny Smith\nArt lovers can meet Smith at the show opening\, Sat.\, Nov. 24\, 4-8 p.m.\, during the Barberton \n\n  \n\n\nWinter Wonderland Festival. Smith will also be painting in the gallery area during the show open hours: Fridays\, 5-8 p.m.\, and Saturdays\, 12-5 p.m. She will give free painting lessons on Fridays from 6-7:30 p.m. during the exhibit. No reservations are required. \nSummit Artspace on Tusc is located at 571 W. Tuscarawas Ave\, Barberton. Check out the event listing for a map. \nABOUT THE ARTIST OF NATURE IN MOTION\nDoylestown\, Ohio artist Penny Smith’s exhibition consists of oil and watercolor paintings that explore the daily lives and inner worlds of wild and domesticated animals and offer glimpses into domestic scenes. Smith\, who has lived in close proximity to wild and working animals in rugged parts of the country for much of her life\, brings her observations and direct experiences with animals to her work. \nSmith began drawing by age 10\, began selling at age 12 and became professional at age 24. She was self-taught for the most part\, benefiting greatly from the instruction of local artists\, whenever possible. The best education was observing her own animals and the local wildlife. Raised deep in the Northwoods of Wisconsin where wildlife is plentiful\, subjects at that time were predominantly deer\, bear\, wolves\, coyotes\, dogs\, cats and horses. \nSoon Smith was selling wildlife paintings and was receiving a few pet portrait commissions while her “real job” at the time was logging. A few years later\, Penny was working for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in wildlife management. Both jobs provided an excellent opportunity to take photos of animals in their natural habitat. \nAfter moving to Ohio\, Smith concentrated on the pet market\, adding graphics in the form of commercial sandblasted stone and redwood signs. Today she mostly uses mediums such as oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Subjects include wildlife\, pet portraits\, still life and graphics. \nPatches by Penny Smith\nSmith hopes that her paintings will serve to connect viewers to the animals she depicts\, creating greater consideration for the wild ones\, and serving as meaningful mementos of the domesticated ones. She creates pet portraits on commission\, and gives a percentage of her revenue to no-kill shelters and rescue facilities. \nHer work is in numerous collections across the country. Her clients include the Vermont Department of Natural Resources\, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\, Robert Redford/ Sundance Ranch\, Utah\, and William Duvane\, Utah. \nSummit Artspace on Tusc is part of Summit Artspace\, a non-profit community art center organization that provides studio\, exhibit and programming spaces in Summit County and the surrounding area for local artists and arts organizations; and is a center for art education open to all residents. \nSee the Summit Artspace exhibit calendar for directions.\nPlan your visit by clicking here.\nHave questions?
SUMMARY:Opening Night: BOX Gallery presents solo exhibitions exploring time\, place
