SUMMARY:CENTURIES OF CYCLING\, Perpetuating the Passion of Collecting Vintage Bicycles
DESCRIPTION:Summit Artspace is pleased to present Centuries of Cycling\, Perpetuating the Passion of Collecting Vintage Bicycles\, a collection of 10 vintage bicycles from collector Matt Barry. SUMMARY:Altered States by Gail Marshall Taber runs Sept. 7-Oct. 19
DESCRIPTION: Altered States by Gail Marshall Taber will be in The Welcome Gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market from Sept. 7 to Oct. 19. The show opens with a reception on Saturday\, Sept. 7\, 5-9 p.m. \n EXHIBIT HOURS\nThrough Oct. 19\,  the show is open weekly Thursday and Friday\, 12-7 p.m\, Saturday\, 12-5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Altered States is also open for Artwalk on Sept. 7 and Oct. 5\, 5-9 p.m.\, and 3rd Thursday\, 4-7 p.m. on Sept. 19 and Oct. 17. \nARTIST STATEMENT Altered States\nI discovered my artistic voice after 30 plus years as a banker. Always\, a collector\, never a maker\, I decided to start taking art classes 10 years ago and haven’t stopped yet! I’m addicted to learning and the creative process and am thrilled to share this with others. Mixed media\, collage\, jewelry\, sculpting\, photography\, and beading are my mediums\, the world\, my muse! \nI am a mixed media artist primarily using assemblage\, collage\, sculpting\, photography\, and beading. My work explores the prevalence in our culture of sexism\, ageism\, homophobia\, misogyny and  worshiping at the feet of physical beauty and perfection.  Of course\, we are\, by and large\, a society that demands political correctness now (except for Donald Trump\, apparently)\, but those age-old prejudices linger and permeate our social\, religious and professional structures. I am not\, by definition\, a bra-burning\, angry feminist\, but I spent over 30 years clawing my way up the corporate ladder and hopefully\, paving the way for women who will come after me. Prejudice and intolerance are sometimes subtle\, sometimes silent\, but always devastating\, because if you don’t know that you are being victimized\, you can’t defend or protect yourself or challenge the status quo. \nArtist Gail Marshall Taber wearing one of her jewelry pieces.\nMy work juxtaposes feminine imagery with masculine traits and vice versa (human and animals)\, and proposes what could be socially acceptable and visually beautiful using surreal imagery\, but always with a sense of humor and a little mystery. In this black and white world (my two favorite colors\, by the way) I love to create that uncomfortable gray area that can’t be defined necessarily\, but can be understood on a deeper level if the viewer looks hard enough! \n_____________________________________________________________________________ \nABOUT SUMMIT ARTSPACE\nSummit Artspace is a non-profit community art center organization that provides studio\, exhibit and programming spaces in Summit County and the surrounding area for local artists and arts organizations; and is a center for art education open to all residents. SUMMARY:Just Ride photo show rolls into Summit Artspace Sept. 7-Oct. 5

Just Ride opens Saturday\, Sept. 7\, with a reception with Fitzwater from 5-9 p.m.   The photos will be on display until Oct. 5\, 2019. \nFitzwater is a commercial photographer based at his studio in Cuyahoga Falls. SUMMARY:Art that beautifies everyday spaces in Function and Form show
DESCRIPTION:Function gives form to the pieces chosen for the new show at Summit Artspace on East Market but artistry breathes life into places for resting\, small beacons of light\, lovely machines to count hours\, ornaments to adorn\, artful vessels and more. \nFunction and Form\, Artful Approaches to Everyday Living Juried Art Exhibition\, which runs until Oct. 5\, is free and open to the public. It will feature 45 pieces by 36 local artists. \nThe first-of-its-kind exhibition boasts designs in multiple mediums that combine creative approaches to the intersection of art and function\, resulting in art that enhances living spaces and satisfies a human need for beautiful surroundings. \nThe Function and Form exhibit is juried by local interior designer and community activist Karen Starr\, co-owner of Hazel Tree Design Studio in downtown Akron. \nFUNCTION AND FORM ARTIST PANEL DISCUSSION\nHear the artists and juror talk about their passion for making a more beautiful world on Thursday\, Oct. 3\, 7 p.m.\, in the main Summit Artspace on East Market gallery. Visit the show before the panel; the gallery opens at noon. Please reserve your seat at https://bit.ly/2Tas70v. \nJuror Karen Starr is known throughout Akron as a fierce advocate for local artists and is a patron\, collaborator and talented designer and artist. Her career in interior design began under the tutelage of nationally recognized residential designer\, Joel Wolfgang\, learning the industry standards and honing her natural eye for composition and balance. \nIn 2009\, she opened Karen Starr Redesign\, where she focused on one of her deepest passions: sustainability. Her redesign work was rooted in the principles of rethinking a client’s space with local\, sustainable design approaches and maximizing what they already owned and loved. This kind of creative resourcefulness helped Starr build a cache of local artisans and manufacturers who can create beautiful and functional pieces either from sustainable materials or by modifying an existing object into a new use\, principles that continue today. \nHazel Tree Design Studio was established in 2010 by Starr and her husband\, Jon Haidet\, combining Starr’s interior design business with her husband’s picture framing company for a one-stop shop of creative ideas for transforming spaces through art and design. \nStarr’s passion for design is matched only by her love of the Akron community\, in all its quirky awesomeness. She is a co-founder of GAINS: The Greater Akron Innovation Network for Sustainability\, Free Akron Outdoor Movies\, and the Highland Square PorchRokr Festival. She works within her home and work neighborhood of West Hill\, doing projects whenever possible with West Hill CDC and neighborhood businesses\, groups and residents. \nBecause of her civic activism\, Starr and the Hazel Tree team were recently asked by Akron Civic Commons to redesign and lead the Lock2 project\, turning an underutilized outdoor park into an intimate place for conversations and gathering. In 2018\, the Hazel Tree team is at it again\, as they reimagine the park spaces at Park East\, another Akron Civic Commons project along the Towpath/Ohio and Erie Canal\, and the new home of Bounce Innovation Hub in the 150-year-old former BF Goodrich tire plant and transforming it into a modern\, exciting and functional facility for not just entrepreneurs\, but the Akron community. \nEXHIBIT HOURS FOR FUNCTION AND FORM\nSummit Artspace is open weekly on Thursday and Friday\, 12-7 p.m.\, and Saturday\, 12-5 p.m.\, for visitors to check out galleries and artist studios. Additional hours include 3rd Thursday\, Sept. 19\, 4-7 p.m. and Saturday\, Oct. 5 for Artwalk\, 5-9 p.m.
SUMMARY:Hiding in full view: This is Max Markwald; "Dissociation" Aug. 3-Sept. 7\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Month-by-month between 2018 and 2019\, Max Markwald became. The artist documented the process of dissociation on canvasses that eventually held no trace of the Melissa that was before. \nSummit Artspace on East Market opens this trailblazing exhibition of 12 large format paintings by local artist Max Markwald in the Transition Gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 E. Market St.\, Akron. The Dissociation exhibit\, which runs until Sept. 7\, is free and open to the public. \nEXHIBIT HOURS\nSummit Artspace is open weekly on Thursday and Friday\, 12-7 p.m.\, and Saturday\, 12-5 p.m.\, for visitors to check out galleries and artist studios. Additional hours include Aug. 3 and Sept. 6 for Artwalk\, 5-9 p.m.\, and during 3rd Thursday\, Aug. 15\, 4-7 p.m. \n \nABOUT MAX Markwald\nMax Markwald graduated from the University of Akron\, Myers School of Art\, with a B.F.A emphasis in Painting and Drawing in Fall 2016. He has participated in the Curated Storefront Project\, which places artwork in unused storefronts throughout downtown Akron. His large scale realistic portraits\, which explore iconic figures and gender\, have also been exhibited at 22 High Street Gallery\, Malone Art Gallery\, and the Hive Mind. Currently his studio is located at the Summit Art Space. \nDissociation Artist Statement\nIn Dissociation\, I painted myself once a month for a year as a way of documenting my gender transition (female to male). I began the series in September of 2018 when I legally changed my name to Max Markwald (he/him/his). Instead of showing a fluid progression\, each painting became an obscured portrait– hiding in full view. \nMy senior year at The University of Akron I had a critique with Judy Pfaff\, who was working on an installation at the Akron Art Museum. She asked me my favorite artists and I rattled off a list that included figurative painters Michaël Borremans and Egon Schiele. “ Those are all male painters” she remarked\, “You need to think about what it means to be a female artist!” I chuckled\, caught off guard\, and thought\, “I don’t want to be female artist\, I just want to be a painter.” \nAfter my senior show\, I did begin thinking about what it meant\, but the label didn’t feel right. I couldn’t recognize myself in the mirror or in pictures. Without words to describe the displacement I felt in my body\, I painted a series of androgynous self portraits. At my gallery opening I felt unqualified to be making work about gender. I looked around and I couldn’t recognize myself in the paintings either. \nThat summer I spent two weeks in Chicago for a studio intensive at North Park University. There I began appropriating Rosie the Riveter. I was drawn to her as a symbol of power for normal every-day working women . Painting my friends as Rosie became a way to explore and subvert gender roles. I finished the last piece while participating in a month long residency at the New York Academy of Art. \nDissociation by Max Markwald\nWhen I got back from New York City I began painting masculinity: an old photograph of myself at fourteen where I looked tomboyish\, the house I grew up in that had no drywall\, just rafters and fiberglass insulation; ridiculously gendered products like deodorant and body spray. I hated how girly my name was\, hated how pretty everyone expected my paintings to be. \nIn April of 2018 I was featured in Canvas Magazines’ “Who’s Next. Emerging Artists in Northeast Ohio.” It was very exciting\, but also the push I needed to come out and be myself– Max Markwald\, just an average-joe painter. \nThat September\, I legally changed my name to Max (he/him/his) and began the series Dissociation. I painted myself once a month for a year as a way of documenting my gender transition. Instead of showing a fluid progression\, each painting became an obscured portrait– hiding in full view. \n__________________________________________ \nABOUT SUMMIT ARTSPACE\nSummit Artspace is a non-profit community art center organization that provides studio\, exhibit and programming spaces in Summit County and the surrounding area for local artists and arts organizations; and is a center for art education open to all residents.
