DESCRIPTION:AKRON AREA ART GROUPS COMPETE FOR 17TH ANNUAL KALEIDOSCOPE SHOW AT SUMMIT ARTSPACE\nMembers of area art groups will bring their best to the year’s most anticipated competition\, the 17th Annual Kaleidoscope Holiday Juried Art Exhibition\, which opens Nov. 22 at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 E. Market St.\, Akron. \nThe show is displayed in the main gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market. The exhibition which runs until Dec. 21 is free and open to the public. Closed Thanksgiving Day. \nThe juried exhibition is organized each year by the Alliance for the Visual Arts. Kaleidoscope was founded in 2003 by AVA which is the umbrella group of the four area arts organizations: Akron Society of Artists\, Artists of Rubber City\, Cuyahoga Valley Art Center and the Women’s Art League of Akron. More than 600 active members are eligible to compete in Kaleidoscope. See last year’s winners here. \nABOUT THE KALEIDOSCOPE JUROR\nJuror Theresa Bembnister\, Curator of Exhibitions at the Akron Art Museum\nThis is a very prominent show and gives inspiration to artists and art lovers from all over Northeast Ohio. Cash prizes for the top juried winners will be announced at 7 p.m. at the opening event by juror Theresa Bembnister\, Curator of Exhibitions at the Akron Art Museum. \nBembnister has curated numerous exhibitions\, including the current Open World: Video Games & Contemporary Art\, an immersive new exhibition that features artists whose work has been influenced by video games. She earned an MA in art history and museum studies from Case Western Reserve University and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. \nVOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE!\nGallery visitors will be able to vote for their favorite artist to win the People’s Choice Award\, a working kaleidoscope designed and hand-blown by glass artist\, Bob Pozarski of Peninsula. DESCRIPTION:JUDY GAISER’S AUDACIOUS ART IN WELCOME GALLERY\nBold and audacious and electric describes the art of Judy Gaiser of Kent in her show\, Out of My Mind. She catches moments–the second before the ball break on the billiard table\, the drum downbeat\, the sexy stilletos of the bridesmaids waiting on the sidewalk outside the church…. \nJudy’s one-woman show is on display at Summit Artspace on East Market in the Welcome Gallery through Dec. 21. The show is free and open to the public. \nJudy is a product of the Cleveland\, Ohio art scene.  She grew up in the area\, and as a youth took part in the Cleveland Museum gifted school program.  She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Capital University and a Masters of Studio Arts from Case Western Reserve through the Cleveland Institute of Art. \nJudy Gaiser\, ACCOMPLISHED AREA ARTIST\nJudith works from imagination\, memory and life in a variety of media. Line\, color\, energy and message are of upmost importance in each of her works. Creativity is the mental escape of her choice and joy.  She has exhibited in shows across Ohio\, including exhibits at the Cleveland Museum of Art\, the Butler Institute of American Art\, the Canton Art Institute and the Massillon Museum of Art. She is regular contributor to shows at Summit Artspace. \n\n \nJudy Gaiser \n\nBELOVED ART TEACHER IN THE NEO\nShe was an art teacher for several decades in Northeast Ohio\, the Columbus area and Portland\, OR. She has won several awards for outstanding teaching. Check our listings at summitartspace.org/event. \nSummit Artspace on East Market is channeling Edgar Allan Poe to bring mystery and Gothic fascination to a juried art exhibit and writing competition\, Poe’s Garden\, that will showcase local creatives and their love for the unearthly. \nPoe’s Garden opens with a free reception with the visual artists and writers on Friday\, Oct. 18\, 5-8 p.m.\, in the main gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market\, 140 East Market St.\, Akron. Winners of both the visual arts and the literary competitions will be announced at 7 p.m.  There will be readings of the winning poetry and short stories after the announcement. \nPoe’s Garden winners to be published!\nThe first-place artwork will be featured in the November issue of The Devil Strip\, an Akron communications hub in print and online that connects neighborhoods and serves as a cultural guide to understanding the city and a springboard for contributing to civic life. The winner of the literary competition will be featured in The Devil Strip’s online edition. \nThe visual arts show\, which runs until Nov. 9 in the main gallery\, is free and open to the public. It will feature 45 pieces by 33 local artists. \nAbout Edgar Allan\nEdgar Allan Poe\nEdgar Allan Poe—his writings\, his mystique\, his life and his death—has inspired visual and literary work across the globe for over a century.  Summit Artspace often sees the fascination among local artists with the mysterious\, the unearthly\, fantasy of the unknown and the distortion of the known. \nPoe\, 1809-1949\, was an American writer\, editor\, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories\, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre.* \nPoe’s Garden will be a place where the deliberate\, wide-ranging variety of visual and literary art will thrill\, astonish\, create dread and awaken and provoke the viewer with images\, imagined worlds and artistic technique. \nOur Juror and Judges\nChristina Turner\nJuror for the visual arts exhibition is Christina Turner of Akron. Her media are paintings\, printing and drawing. Turner was graduated with honors from the University of Akron Myers School of Art and ran FORUM artspace in the 78th Street Studios complex in Cleveland from 2011-2015. She had written for the local arts blog Curatorial Collective and the CAN Journal. She currently serves on the board of directors for SPACES in Cleveland. \nHeather Braun\, Ph.D.\nHeather Braun\, Ph.D\, associate professor of English at the University of Akron\, leads the team of literary judges for Poe’s Garden. She teaches Romantic and Victorian literature\, composition\, literary theory and young adult literature. She is the author of The Rise and Fall of the Femme Fatale in British Literature\, published in 2012. Braun has also worked with young writers in Summit Lake through the Reimagining the Civic Commons project\, helping them showcase stories about where they live. \nAlso on the judges’ panel are: \nSandra Perlman\nSandra Perlman of Kent is an award-winning writer & teacher. More than a dozen of her plays have been produced from The Cleveland Play House to Kashmir\, India. She is the recipient of three Ohio Arts Council grants and her work has been published by Dramatic Publishing\, the Ohio Arts Council\, Middle Tennessee Press and the Poets’ League of Greater Cleveland. She has taught at Case Western\, Cleveland State and Kent State universities as well as working as a writer/producer/host for PBS Channels 45/49. \nBrian Harrell\nBrian Harrell is a faculty member at Northeast Ohio Medical University and the University of Akron. Brian’s research interests include medical and healthcare rhetoric\, reflective practices\, research writing and online pedagogy. Brian is an active member of several regional and national academic and medical associations participating on the board of trustees\, academic committees\, academic journal reviewing and conferences. \nAbbey Bashor\nAbbey Bashor is a marketing assistant at the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) in Akron. She primarily supports marketing and PR efforts for the NIHF events and museum team\, and also regularly contributes to the NIHF blog writing about inventors and innovation. DESCRIPTION:JUDY GAISER’S AUDACIOUS ART IN WELCOME GALLERY\nBold and audacious and electric describes the art of Judy Gaiser of Kent in her show\, Out of My Mind. She catches moments–the second before the ball break on the billiard table\, the drum downbeat\, the sexy stilletos of the bridesmaids waiting on the sidewalk outside the church…. \nJudy’s one-woman show is on display at Summit Artspace on East Market in the Welcome Gallery through Dec. 21. The show is free and open to the public. \nJudy is a product of the Cleveland\, Ohio art scene.  She grew up in the area\, and as a youth took part in the Cleveland Museum gifted school program.  She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Capital University and a Masters of Studio Arts from Case Western Reserve through the Cleveland Institute of Art. \nJudy Gaiser\, ACCOMPLISHED AREA ARTIST\nJudith works from imagination\, memory and life in a variety of media. Line\, color\, energy and message are of upmost importance in each of her works. Creativity is the mental escape of her choice and joy.  She has exhibited in shows across Ohio\, including exhibits at the Cleveland Museum of Art\, the Butler Institute of American Art\, the Canton Art Institute and the Massillon Museum of Art. She is regular contributor to shows at Summit Artspace. \nBELOVED ART TEACHER IN THE NEO\nShe was an art teacher for several decades in Northeast Ohio\, the Columbus area and Portland\, OR. She has won several awards for outstanding teaching. He has a studio in Barberton. \nJuror and artist Terry Klausman\nWhere you can see more of this artist’s work: \nKlausman has also been involved in making performance art — heavily visual events\, usually involving performers\, which unfold in real time — which included “Resurrection: a performance/fine art project” in 2016\, and a site-specific work\, “Anything will Help.” The latter was documented by Stephen Paternite as a photo essay exploring some of the social issues affecting communities of Northeast Ohio and published in 2019. Another performance piece entitled “the Resurrection Project” involved driving in a race that ended with crashing into the artist’s “vintage boat\,” collecting the debris and then making a work of art that was juried into a national show in Chicago. Klausman also created “A Conversation in Motion” for the Akron-Summit County Public Library Main Branch in 2014-2015; you can see it in the library’s Special Collections department.
