Kaleidoscope 2008: The Alliance for Visual Arts Show

The Alliance for Visual Arts in Akron, representing over 500 artists from Akron Society of Artists, Artists of Rubber City, Cuyahoga Valley Art Center and Women’s Art League, presents its 5th annual juried show of members’ work. On display November 22nd through January 3rd, work in the exhibition is specially selected by internationally known contemporary abstract painter Craig Lucas, the guest juror. Gallery visitors are once again asked to vote for their favorite piece in the show. The winning artists will be announced December 31st during First Night Akron festivities and will receive a kaleidoscope created by glass artist Bob Pozarski.

“Thanks for inviting me to jury the 6th annual art exhibit for the Alliance for Visual Arts in Akron. By way of introduction to my remarks I might say that although I am considered an abstract painter, I orient myself in my studio practice through drawing. Drawing, and I mean drawing from observation, is the touchstone of my work. For me, it is a means of inventing a response to the buzzing welter of the visual world. That said, it pleases me to note the strength of traditional genres of portraiture, still life and especially landscape, among the entries to this years exhibition-all of which depend on a solid grasp of drawing.

In the process of jurying I was struck by the luminous, densely build surface of Kimberly Moore’s two entries, as well as Julie DiSiena’s freshness and integrity of vision. The silvery tonality of Barbara Lord’s work, the accomplished painterly touch of Jack Liberman and Sue Bergelis, the ambitious overall energy of Candace Velmin and the well developed textural depiction and golden tone of Linda Tompkins work, are all worth noting. I was also encouraged with the frequent idiosyncratic, highly independent work submitted, such as the pieces of Lynn Lewis and Betty Anderson,” Lucas said.
