Fresh & Springy: 8th Annual Juried Show

3 Artists to be Awarded Prizes at Annual Fresh Art Opening at Summit Artspace

Three artists will be awarded top prizes on March 9 at the opening of Fresh & Springy at Summit Artspace Gallery in downtown Akron.  This meet-the-artists reception is free to the public from 5 to 7 pm this Friday.  Fresh Art is an annual juried show in which area artists are challenged to stretch their creative muscles by producing new works that reflect novel thinking and unusual materials.  This year organizers asked that artists think spring – literally or figuratively — when creating their works of art, meaning anything from pogo sticks to matresses to daffodils.

Winner of the first place award of $500 is Joseph Walton of Ravenna for piece, Reductive Painting, 1×1 Series.   The $300 second place prize goes to Kristi Wall of west Akron for her paper installation titled Some Strange Specimen.  Third place of $200 goes to Carol Klingel of Lodi for her mixed media piece titled Awake, Thou Wintery Earth!  Awards were sponsored by Summa Foundation.

Five artists earned honorable mention distinctions. They are Connie Bloom of west Akron for her fiber piece titled Sun Soup, Robert Carpenter of west Akron for his mixed media piece titled Treehouse for a Weary Sage, Carol Paquay of Wadsworth for her painting titled Pigs in Sunlight, Bob Peck of west Akron for his painting titled Flying Machine and Michelle Surrena of Kent for her painting titled Sprouts.

The guest judges, Deborah Pinter and Leandra Drumm, had 107 artworks to choose from and selected 52 pieces to be on display through April 14.  Pinter is an artist and executive director of the Orange Art Center in Pepper Pike.  Drumm is an Akron artist/craftsmen well-known for her works in pewter and etched glass.  They also selected the prize winners.  The exhibition includes two and three dimensional art created in all types of materials – paint, ceramics, fabric, photography, metal and mixed media.
