Active members are eligible to compete in Kaleidoscope. This is a very prominent show and gives inspiration to artists and art lovers from all over Northeast Ohio.

Gallery visitors will be able to vote for their favorite piece to win the coveted Kaleidoscope Award, a working kaleidoscope designed and hand-blown by glass artist Bob Pozarski. The winner will be announced at the gallery during First Night Akron, Dec. 31, at 8 p.m. Summit Artspace on East Market will be open from 6-9 p.m. for the end-of-year event. Here are the winners of the 2017 Kaleidoscope:

FIRST PLACE
Trapped
by Phyllis Lawicki
watercolor & acrylic
Juror’s comment, Patrick Melnick: “A stunning abstraction
that begins with a heavy, cluttered base and extends upward
in a heavenly ascent. It is Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto
made visual.”

SECOND PLACE
Pieces & Parts
by Marita Bitans
photography
Juror’s comment, Patrick Melnick: “Margaret Bourke-White,
move over!! The functional boredom of factory mechanics
turned into a virtuosic display of composition and value.”

THIRD PLACE
T-Rex
by Barbara (Montague) Himes
oil
Juror’s comment, Patrick Melnick: “A true artist
manipulates and converges image reference with
aesthetic abstraction. A pure delight of an ordinary
‘cat’ moment made extraordinary through art.”

1st HONORABLE MENTION
The Cognitive Factor
by Helen Wilson
mixed media and gilding
Juror’s comment, Patrick Melnick:
“Rhythm, texture, asymmetry arranged
in a harmonious delight of color,
material, and surface interaction.”

2nd HONORABLE MENTION
Bypassed
by Marita Bitans
photography
Juror’s comment, Patrick Melnick: “A true
example of an artist’s eye which sees
structure, form, and composition in the
everydayness of life.”

3rd HONORABLE MENTION
Sweet Spirits
by Linda Nye
collage
Juror’s comment, Patrick Melnick: “An ecstatic nirvana
of chaos in patterns and texture held in check by an
infrastructure of squares and rectangles.”

4th HONORABLE MENTION
Watching
by Carol Klingel
oil on wood
Juror’s comment, Patrick Melnick: “An
unsettling bravura of spatial and image
disconnectedness. Cubism, surrealism, and
The Twilight Zone made accessible by
the artist’s introspective exploration.”

JUROR’S AWARD
Prairie Pastels

by Marjorie Dettling
oil
Juror’s comment, Patrick Melnick: “The sky’s
thick impastoed bubble-gum/cotton candy
sweetness hovers above an unsettled, turbulent,
discordant landscape of mayhem. Contracts converge.”
