“Unmonumental Landscapes” January 20 – February 25

Most would not associate the words “temporary” and “light” with visual arts and landscape. Unmonumental Landscape, an exhibit at Summit Artspace January 20–February 25, does just this.  Coe Lapossy, Sommer Tolan, Chelsea Blackerby and Debra DeGregorio offer their unique perspectives on ethereal landscape art through three-dimensional installations, drawings and paintings.

The overriding theme of the exhibition is understanding one’s place in the contemporary world.  The artists were brought together by Debra DeGregorio, a Kent State University BFA graduate who recently returned to Akron from attending graduate school in New York.  She said the show also illustrates a current trend in art world of creating works that are more ethereal or temporary. The show runs until February 25, 2012. Akron Area Arts Alliance Winter Quarterly Meeting

Winter Quarterly Meeting

Wednesday, January 25 11:30 am  The University of Akron Martin Center — 105 Fir Hill Street

Guest Speaker

Dr. Eric Anthony Johnson

Executive Director of University Park Alliance

“The Role of Creative Arts and Organic Culture as a Driver in Creating

a Competitive 21st Century Community”

Under the leadership of Eric Anthony Johnson, University Park Alliance has developed a master plan to redevelop a 50-block area that will essentially create a new center for Akron.  City leaders have joined the effort to dramatically reshape downtown near The University of Akron.  The plans extend much further than what is currently called the University Park neighborhood.  The project aims to revive the 50-blocks into a mixed-use and vibrant area, leveraging the university and other major institutional employers to revitalize the heart of downtown.  The development is aimed to start next spring and run up to 2030.

Although we have seen several articles and maps in the Beacon Journal describing these ambitious plans, we have not heard where our arts and cultural assets fit in.  This is our opportunity to learn more about the project and how Dr. Johnson views our role.  This would be an excellent program to invite board members and guests to attend.  You can learn more about the UPA project at http://video.westernreservepublicmedia.org/video/2048032269/

Arts Alliance Director Announces Retirement

Arts Alliance Director Announces Retirement

(Akron) – Jessie Raynor, director of the Akron Area Arts Alliance (AAAA), announced today that she plans to retire from her post by June 30, 2012.

“I’ve been at the helm of the arts alliance for the past 12 years, and I’m very proud of its growth and accomplishments,” Raynor said.  “But, first and foremost, the alliance is and will continue to be a collaboration with shared credit for our significant impact and progress.”

AAAA celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this month. The organization was established in 1991 by 12 organizations to encourage cooperation and understanding among the area’s arts and culture groups.

A resident of Silver Lake, Raynor became AAAA director in September 1999 when the non-profit advocacy group opened its first office on Bowery Street and had a membership of 20 organizations and 8 individuals.

Today AAAA members include 160 people representing 48 organizations, artists and arts supporters.  Its offices are housed in Summit Artspace, a project of AAAA in partnership with Summit County government, which is located in a historic downtown Akron building at 140 E. Market Street.  Summit Artspace features three floors of arts activities including two galleries, six artist studios, classrooms, performance/event space and the Creative Business Center, an affordable, shared office environment for emerging arts businesses.

“Jessie Raynor has done an incredible job, and we will miss her excellent leadership,” said AAAA President Margo Snider. “She has worked tirelessly and effectively to help AAAA promote the value of a strong, diverse and vibrant arts and culture community to the economic well-being and quality of life in our area.”

According to Snider, AAAA will begin a national search in January for its next director.

Jazz Pianist Joe Augustine’s New CD Available

Jazz pianist Joe Augustine, artist-in-residence at The University of Akron School of Music, has released a new CD in time for holiday gift giving.

“Remembering You” was written entirely by Augustine, and many of the 13 songs are dedicated to friends of the UA School of Music. For example, “Sassy Sally” is dedicated to Sally and Bob Syme and “Inspired” is dedicated to Guy and Renee Pipitone. “Reminisce” is dedicated to the late UA President Emeritus Dominic Guzzetta and “License to Groove” is dedicated to Ed and Fran Bittle. “Zip It” celebrates Zippy, the UA mascot.

In addition to teaching and performing at the UA School of Music, Augustine has a key role in the school’s All-Steinway Piano Campaign. Achieving an All-Steinway designation — meaning that all of its 83 pianos are manufactured by Steinway — is a major fundraising initiative for the UA School of Music. The school has produced “Remembering You” to help generate support for the campaign. To learn more about the All-Steinway Campaign, visit www.uakron.edu/steinway.

Augustine is also a Steinway Artist, which means that he is a member of the renowned piano company’s worldwide roster. Members of that elite group include such music legends as Irving Berlin, Harry Connick Jr., Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Vladimir Horowitz, Diana Krall, and Igor Stravinsky.

“Remembering You” is $15 plus shipping. To order, call 330-972-8301 or e-mail concerts@uakron.edu.

Calling Artists to “Think Spring” for the 2012 Fresh Art Show

Whether it’s jumping for joy, the insides of a mattress or the first day of…Summit Artspace Gallery is asking area artists to think spring when creating works for its 2012 Fresh Art show.  This time titled Fresh & Springy, the annual exhibition calls on artists to stretch their creative muscles and work in novel styles, new directions and unusual materials.  Selected works will be displayed from March 9 through April 14.

“Artists are invited to embrace the theme and allow their ideas to flow and grow – or leap and cavort,” said gallery coordinator Joan Colbert.  “Springy can be bouncy, resilient and fresh – literally or figuratively.”

This is the eighth Summit Artspace Fresh Art juried show, which is open to artists who live, work or attend universities in Summit, Portage and Medina Counties.   It attracts unique works in a wide variety of media by emerging young artists and established art professionals.  Guest judges – Deborah Pinter and Leandra Drumm – will select the works to be displayed.  Pinter is an artist and executive director of the Orange Art Center, and Drumm is an artist/craftsmen well-known for her works in metal and glass.

The judges will also select three top winners to be awarded cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200.  For the fourth year Summa Foundation is the Fresh Art prize sponsor.

Submissions will be accepted on Thursday, March 1 from noon to 7 pm at Summit Artspace, 140 E. Market Street in Downtown Akron.  Only one entry is allowed per person, and there is a $10 entry fee.  Download the application Fresh Art 2012 Entry Form or call 330-376-8480 to receive one via mail.

Prize winners will be announced at a special public reception on Friday, March 9 from 5 to 7 pm.  Summit Artspace is a project of the Akron Area Arts Alliance in partnership with Summit County government.  It is located in a historic building at 140 E. Market St., one block east of the Akron Art Museum.  The gallery is supported by the Akron Community Foundation and Ohio Arts Council.
